For
many years, it was believed that the pageant originated in 1967.
However, new information confirms that indeed the pageant was first
held in 1947 and was won by Joy Jones. It was not until 1967
that the program reappeared thanks to the local Jaycees. All
across the country, Jaycee organizations spearheaded the effort to
chair local pageants in order to provide women with college
scholarships.
In
that year, Joyce Jordan, a student at OTI went on to win the title
of Miss Klamath County. The pageant was held for two more
years, before the event became too overwhelming for the Jaycees to
handle, and they were forced to give it up.
A local
committee headed by Christy Commons, a former Miss
Douglas County and local school teacher, successfully returned the
pageant to the Klamath Basin in 1978. Since that time, it has
played a prominent role in helping area women complete their college
educations.
A
number of our local contestants have gone on to compete in other
Miss America preliminary competitions and have won titles. We
would like to recognize them and their accomplishments here
